Expecting is Candice Hoyes's debut solo album, seven years in the making. Across thirteen tracks it moves between spiritual jazz, soul, and R&B without settling into any one of them. Hoyes weaves together some of the music's most searching musicians: Makaya McCraven, Joel Ross, Sullivan Fortner, Casey Benjamin, Courtney Bryan, and Junius Paul among them.
The title track is the first-ever cover of Minnie Riperton's "Expecting." Hoyes also delivers the first-ever cover of The Sylvers' "Love Over Mind," and rebuilds SWV's "Rain" into drum-and-bass technicolor. "Winnifred's Barrel" layers four generations of women from Hoyes's own family singing on the same track, decades apart.
"This album is alchemy, conjuring a way to get back to total vulnerability and candor with myself," Hoyes says.
